About:

Chicago Footwork is a dance form that was created by the African American community in Chicago during the 1980’s and evolved into a highly complex technical battle style. The music used for Chicago Footwork maintains an average of 160 beats per minute, and the very rapid dance movements of the form reflect that speed. Music used for Chicago Footwork sessions, performances, and battles is a blended style of electronic dance music in direct lineage of House music (which originated in Chicago), Ghetto House tracks, and Juke tracks (sampling Hip Hop, Funk, and R&B). Chicago Footwork upholds the concepts of battle clique culture, honoring multi-generational dance lineage, and developing personal dance style within a crew style. Within the last decade, the dance has moved from existing only in Chicago to being featured world-wide on performance stages, music videos, commercials, movies, television, and dance conferences.

Creative Netwerk is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 45-2107249) that inspires, educates, and builds community through dance culture. Creative Netwerk brings high-quality dance programming to communities throughout the country who would otherwise not have access to such opportunities (weekly classes in LA, NYC, Chicago, Santa Barbara, Des Moines, and more). Creative Netwerk is dedicated to the performance and preservation of American-based art forms created by African-American and Latinx communities. We develop the next generation of leaders, build a vibrant network of artists, and increase access to cultural education to strengthen our multicultural movement. We promote equity, empowerment, and healing through arts education for all ages. Through our programming, we address risk factors in the lives of under-resourced youth; contribute to the growth and diversification of the arts and entertainment industry; provide professional development opportunities to creatives within our netwerk; and help increase school engagement and career success for youth of low-income communities.

Chicago Footworkology is a project created in response to the global pandemic that provides online workshops, panel discussions, university presentations, battles, and collaborative community events to educate students world-wide about Chicago Footwork culture. Our first online camp had over 200 participants from 40 different countries! We hosted four more online Footwork cultural camps including a DJ and Production camp with legendary Footwork producers such as RP Boo, DJ Clent, and Traxman. All programs started online and have now moved into studio, community, commercial, and higher education spaces. Each of our camps offered multiple scholarships, with priority given to Chicagoans and dancers who were in need of financial assistance.

All proceeds from Chicago Footworkology 2025 Summer Camp will support Creative Netwerk community youth dance and DJ programming across the city of Chicago.
